Maya's statues & party symbol elephant likely to be draped

Mayawati
Lucknow, Jan 7: The Election Commission of India is likely to take a crucial decision on Saturday, Jan 7 on whether to drape up all statues of BSP supremo Mayawati and that of her party symbol, the elephant ahead of the assembly elections in the state.

According to Election Commission's model code of conducts, the pictures of all candidates on public properties should be covered during polls and the same should be applied to statues also.

The move has come after opposition leaders complained to the EC about a week back that the statues of Mayawati and her party symbol could gain massive advantage to BSP as they were clearly promoting her party for the forthcoming elections in the state.

Last year in Oct, the UP Chief Minister had inaugurated the Ambedker Park in Noida which has many life-size statues of many Dalit leaders and Mayawati herself. Moreover, the park has also 24 pink sandstone elephants.

Meanwhile, EC will take its final decision over the complaint in a meeting on Saturday, Jan 7 evening, said sources.
