7.0 magnitude earthquake hits Japan

Tokyo, Jan 1: A strong earthquake measuring magnitude 7.0 on the richter scale hit off the shores of South Pacific Island, Japan.

According to the Meteorological Agency, the quake struck about about 370 kilometers (230 miles) below the sea surface. No tsunami warning has been issued so far.
