Not-so-happy New Year for Del; water, power bills to shoot up

As per the decision, the water charges will be hiked by 10 percent and will be effective from tomorrow (Jan 1st, 2012). The DJB has decided not to issue any notification in this regard, as the decision regarding the same was announced earlier.
According to the existing system, consumers pay water charges based on the slab system. Consumers pay Rs 2.20 per kilolitre plus a surcharge of Rs 55 for consuming water upto 10 kilolitres per month; Rs 3.30 per kilolitre plus a surcharge of Rs 110 for consumption of water between 10-20 kilolitres. In the third slab, consumers pay Rs 16.50 per kilolitre for consumption between 20-30 kilolitres. This attracts a surcharge of Rs 165 for the consumer.
Consumers will further be hit hard from February when power distribution companies will recover the fuel surcharge from them for Oct-Dec that paid to electricity generation firms. The 2012 bill for Feb will also see a jump of 30 paise to Re 1 in per unit cost.
