Panel to visit 116-yr-old Mullaperiyar, adjoining areas

Idukki, Dec 24: Supreme Court appointed technical experts on Mullaperiyar Dam issue began their visit to dams located in Idukki and adjoining areas so as to give inputs for the panel to come up with a report on the much disputed issue between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

CD Thatte and KK Mehta, members of the expert panel visited the Pambala Dam at lower Periyar area and would inspect Kulamavu, Idukki and Cheruthoni dams later in the day.

They are also expected to inspect the Mullaperiyar Dam on Saturday, Dec 24.

The Empowered Committee was formed in 2010 under the chairmanship of AS Anand, former Chief Justice of India with the mandate of probing into all aspects of the dispute over the issue between the two states.

Kerala in its argument over the issue said that the dam's existing structure was extremely weak in addition to being prone to earthquakes and would collapse costing millions of lives.

The Tamil Nadu government has, however, rejected all claims by saying that the dam could be retained by doing necessary repairs to it.
