Deadly typhoon in Philippines claim 1000 lives

Manila, Dec 20: With the storm in Philippines storm wreaking havoc in the country, the flash floods and landslides continue unabated. The death toll has gone up to 1000 people caused by the deadly Typhoon Washi that swept through riverside and coastal villages in the southern Philippines late last week. The information was revealed by the national disaster agency on Tuesday.

With the most casualties reported from cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, the agency has divulged that as many as 957 were killed and 49 were missing. The previous death toll was 650.

In the midst of the natural catastrophe, authorities are trying hard to prevent diseases from spreading. The water-logging, mud slides are hampering rescue activities in the area. The decomposing bodies are being disposed off by digging mass graves.

Philippines President Benigno Aquino is expected to visit the calamity-hit cities on Tuesday. The government has revealed that more than 338,000 people were affected by the disaster.
