Mullaperiyar row: Malayalis reopen shops in Erode

The shops that shut included jewellery shops and bakeries apart from others. Shop Keepers said that the shops were reopened after they were given police protection.
The shops and other business establishments run by Malayalis were shut down after an attack on two shopkeepers from Kerala by a group of men over the raging Mullaperiyar row.
Meanwhile, talking over the Mullaperiyar issue, Home Minister P Chidambaram has commented that Kerala is raising ruckus over the dam row keeping in mind the upcoming Piravom by elections in the state.
The comment has been heavily criticised by the Kerala MP PT Thomas who demanded an apology from the Home Minister.
In a stand totally unheard of by a country's Home Minister, Chidambaram said that he hoped the Supreme Court's verdict on the Mullaperiyar issue will favour Tamil Nadu. He further said that the Mullaperiyar Dam was built for Tamil Nadu.
He further said that the SC appointed committe will submit its report on dam by Feb.
