West Bengal: 40 Killed after consuming spurious liquor

Diamond Harbour(West Bengal), Dec 14: After the devastating fire in AMRI hospital, the state again faced one of the worst tragedies in one of its villages. In the mishap, around forty people were dead and over 100 hospitalized after they consumed spurious liquor at illicit dens in the early hours of Wednesday, officials claimed.

Four people were arrested for supplying spurious liquor at Sangrampur village in Magraha -1 block of the South 24-Parganas district.

Police claimed that around 100 victims had been rushed to various hospitals in the vicinity, after they fell ill. NS Nigam, District Magistrate told the media that among the victims, few of them are serious.

The victims have been admitted to the Diamond Harbour Hospital, health centres and nursing homes. The mishap occurred after villagers consumed the liquor.

"From around 2 a.m. Wednesday, people started vomiting, had loose motions and complained of serious stomach pain. A lot of people are still there in hospital. The toll will go up massively," said a Sangrampur resident.

Angry locals demolished the liquor den on Wednesday morning.

On raising the issue in the state assembly, Opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's statement over the issue.
