Assembly polls in 5 states including UP likely in Feb

New Delhi , Dec 13: The Election Commission has decided to hold the assembly elections in five states including the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh and Punjab in Feb, 2012. The other states to elect their representatives are Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa and the entire process of elections would end by first week of March.

According to a source, the election commission will officially declare about the 2012 assembly elections in 15-20 days after the winter session of the parliament. The commission will announce poll schedule by the first week Jan, 2012.

Meanwhile, the forthcoming assembly polls are crucial for both ruling UPA and BJP in view of their future strategy. Currently, UP is being ruled by Mayawati’s BSP, Congress is in power in Manipur and Goa while in Punjab, the BJP-SAD alliance is in power where as Uttarakhand has a BJP government.
