.xxx domain names for sale; porn to have new abode on WWW

Washington, Dec 7: It is sale time, and no we are not talking about the annual Christmas offers. Top level .xxx sites are expected to go on sale today, as porn material available online will now have their own abode on the world wide web. The new domain names will make it easier for users to classify the adult content for consumers, providers and avoiders.

The domain names are offered by the ICM Registry and have completed the preliminary sales periods and are now open for sale among the general public. This move will make it easier for parents to filter and block adult content. According the ICM Registry, “over 250 million pages of adult oriented content have already been labeled using the MetaCert technology including the .XXX domain pages."

According to a CBS News report, Metacert is a web browser add-on that helps parents filter content and block sites. Stuart Lawley, Chief Executive Officer of the ICM Registry has been quoted as saying, "The .xxx extension has been controversial, but I think the consumer reception has been positive."
