TN: Will Rajiv Gandhi assassins be hanged? Judgment today

Claiming that the President had taken 11 years in deposing their mercy pleas, Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan earlier had sought a stay on their execution.
The High Court had earlier bashed the centre and state government demanding their replies within eight weeks as to why there was such a long delay in clearing the petitions filed by Rajiv Gandhi's killers.
The Supreme Court of India in 1999 had confirmed the death sentences of the three accused; Santhan, Perarivalan and Nalini in carrying out the assassination of Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. The death sentence of Nalini was later commuted to life imprisonment after the intervention of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who considered the mercy petitions after Nalini delivered a baby girl in jail.
