PM Silvio Berlusconi signs off, women in Italy rejoice

Rome, Nov 12: In what can be termed as a first casualty in Europe debt crisis, Silvio Berlusconi, Italian Prime Minister on Sunday stepped down, ending an era in Italian politics.

Following the fall of 17-year-old Berlusconi government, Mario Monti an economist, is all set to lead the eurozone's third largest nation in its hard time.

Facing a severe eurozone debt crisis, which has been a major concerned for Europe itself, Berlusconi, promised to quit after Italian Parliament approved austerity measures sought by the European Union. As on Sunday the lower house conceded some of the recommendations, Berlusconi, quit office sticking to his word. He officially submitted his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano

Italian population gathered outside the PM's office to cheers Berlusconi's departure. An orchestra and choir was arranged to play "Hallelujah" chorus from Handel"s “Messiah," as the crowded Italians shouted 'buffoon' Berlusconi to 'go home.'
