Haridwar: Stampede mars religious event, 16 dead, 30 injured

Haridwar, Nov 8: 16 people were dead and at least 30 were severely injured during a stampede at a religious event in Haridwar in Uttarakhand on Tuesday, Nov 8.

The shocking incident took place when thousands of devotees attended a religious ceremony at Har-Ki-Pauri ground - a sacred place and one of the most holiest ghats at the bank of river Ganga in Haridwar.

People gathered at the venue to celebrate the 100th anniversary of religious Guru Pandit Sriram Sharma. The five-day-long function had started on Monday, Nov 7. Several conflicting incidents have been reported behind the reason of the stampede. The injured people were taken to the local hospital.

According to sources, Gayatri Pariwar activists were the in-charge of security of the people at the ceremony. Meanwhile, organisers informed that almost 5 lakh people are expected to reach the venue in the coming days to participate in the function.
