Pune: BJP cheers; wins Khadakwasla Assembly by-poll

Pune, Oct 17: BJP-Sena candidate Tapkir Dhondiba Bhimrao has won the Khadakwasla bypoll in Pune. Bhimrao has defeated Harshada Wanjale, who is the wife of Ramesh Wanjale who was an MNS MLA and NCP candidate. She had to taste defeat by a mere 3,500 votes. The defeat also spelt doom for the Pawars, who was backing Wanjale in a big way.

The bypoll had to be held after the death of sitting MLA Ramesh Wanjale of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. This result comes as yet another setback for the Congress and a part-win for Anna Hazare.

Khadakwasla is also known as the constituency where scam tainted CWG Organizing Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi won the elections in 2009 in the Congress ticket. He is currently in the Tihar jail after being accused of the massive fraud in the CWG games.
