Lokpal to have more constitutional powers than EC

New Delhi, Oct 12: Supporting the idea mooted by Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, Union Law Minister Salman khurshid said that the proposed Lokpal will have more constitutional powers than the Election Commission of India.

"We are working on a very strong Lokpal bill. A Lokpal bill that will come with a constitutional amendment. That amendment will give the Lokpal the status of a constitutional authority," the minister told PTI.

In support of Rahul Gandhi's move, Khursid said that the Lokpal will be "more powerful than the Election Commission", "will have far greater powers" as well as a profile and stature which will be much higher than EC.

The new move seems to be designed after civil society activist and political opponents started campaigning against government for not supporting team Anna's demands. Meanwhile, Khursid's disclosure coincided with the inauguration of L K Advani's rath yatra against graft.
