Chennai, Oct 11: Indian nuclear Power Plants have strengthened its design to deal with the natural events. An emergency power equipment, de-aerator storage tank and piping have been strengthened to protect the nuclear power plants and an earthquake notification system has been installed in Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) control room, which can scan seismic sites in US and Europe.

Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) outfall channel has been added in MAPS after tsunami hit the city, which can absorb energy from the ocean waves and when it reaches to the shore, it can reduce the wave height.

Tsunami warning system needs to be activated to protect the reactor from an earthquake of 7.0 Richter scale and the site reactors will shut down safely within an expected period of 2-3 hours.

All nuclear power plants will undergo for a safety review to keep their systems upgraded. India has a record proving that nuclear power plants are operated safely.
