Japanese disease kills 376 children in UP; Delhi in danger

Uttar Pradesh
New Delhi, Oct 9: A Japanese disease called Encephalitis, transmitted by mosquito bites, severely hit Uttar Pradesh. Almost 376 children reportedly died in the eastern part of the state.

Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh was the worst affected area. Extending the fear among the citizen, ill-effect of Encephalitis has been spreading towards Delhi and Chandigarh. Several reports of viral infection have been registered in many hospitals in the region.

Beside leaving 376 children dead, the disease left almost 4480 people infected. The number of infected people was double than the report of 2010.

Hospital authorities feared that many more people could become victims over government's inaction to prevent the situation.

Media reports suggested that the central government delayed to response to the letters asking for sending vaccines to prevent the spread and recurrence of the lethal outbreak.

Head of Department, Paediatrics, BRD Medical College and Hospital, Dr K P Kushwaha said, "We get a lot of patients. To take care of all of them, we need more funds from the Centre."
