Violating Poll Code; EC files case against DMDK chief's wife

Madurai, Oct 3: Premalatha Vijayakanth, wife of DMDK chief and opposition leader has been charged for violating the breach of election code of conduct.

During the Madurai election campaign, Premalatha had brought six vehicles without taking prior permission from the election authorities. She took all vehicles to collect votes for DMDK's mayor candidate, Kaviarasu. Police have also registered cases against mayor candidate K kaviarasu, DMDK MLAs R Sunderrajan, A K T Raja and party's councillor candidates.

During the campaign, Premalatha had criticized AIADMK as well as DMK to attract huge crowd. She allegedly claimed that AIADMK didn't pay any respect to DMDK, so the party may step down.

"It is a violation of election norms to have a convoy of vehicles without obtaining permission," said the police.

Madurai south taluk village administrative officer Muruganantham filed a complaint for violating the electoral norms. A similar case was filed in the Thilagar Thidal police against Premalatha.

Police revealed that Premalatha had brought three sports utility vehicles, a jeep and a tempo traveller.

DMDK functionaries was quoted as saying, "We were accusing the state election commission of acting in a biased manner right from the start. The cases have proved that our allegations are true."
