Kanimozhi's bail plea hearing deferred to Oct 17

New Delhi, Oct 1: DMK MP Kanimozhi will have to remain in jail for a while longer after the bail plea hearing scheduled to be heard on Saturday has been deferred to Oct 17. This was based on a request by CBI and Kanimozhi's lawyers seeking another date for hearing of the plea. Also, there is a Supreme Court order that states that bail cannot be granted till the CBI finishes the framing of charges.

The CBI is understood to finish framing charges on Oct 15, stated special CBI Judge O P Saini.

The daughter of DMK Chief Karunanidhi has been housed in the Tihar jail since May 20 after the CBI named her accused in the 2G scam that rocked the nation and still remains very much in the news. The court will hear her bail plea that was filed on Sept 16 before the special CBI court.

Sharad Kumar, managing director of Kalaignar TV Pvt Ltd along with Kanimozhi is seeking bail after the CBI which is investigating the murky 2G spectrum scam named the duo co-conspirators in the scam. Both Kanimozhi's and Saharad Kumar's bail plea will be heard on Oct 17. They were accused of accepting bribe to the tune of Rs 200 crore.

In an earlier hearing in Aug, Kanimozhi had stated in the CBI court that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the then Finanace Minister P Chidambaram were aware of the 2G licence allocation norms and had decided not to auction the same with the consent of then Telecom Minister A Raja. Raja too have been jailed for his involvement in the scam.
