This will be the 14th district which will be announced by Mayawati government. The new district likely to be named after Dalit icon Periyar E V Ramasamy as said an official of UP government.

In 2010, Mayawati government was announced Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar as 72nd district of the state which consists of three tehsils of Sultanpur district namely Amethi, Gauriganj and Musafirkhana and two tehsils of Rae Bareli namely Salon and Tiloi.

The demand for seperate Hapur district was their since 1976 when the district of Ghaziabad was curved out of Meerut. That time also Hapur was also being considered as seperate district. But due to some reason it was put aside.
