Killers suspected J Dey of sharing sensitive info: Patil

Mumbai, Sept 27: Mid-Day senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was murdered by a gang who suspected Dey of sharing sensitive information about them with the members of rival gang, said Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil.

During his last days, he ( J Dey) was writing about the oil mafia, links between the underworld and the policemen and on other issues.

Satish Kalia, a gangster of the Chhota Rajan group was the main accused in the journalist's death. He was arrested by the crime branch of Mumbai police on Sept 6.

In a press conference, Patil has been quoted as saying, "Police will soon file a chargesheet in connection with J Dey's murder.Everyone knows the motive behind the brutal killing. The motive will be disclosed in the chargesheet. Those who killed Dey believed that the reporter was passing on information of their gang to members of a rival group."

He added, "After visiting the residence of Dey and looking at the family's lifestyle, I can certainly tell that the senior crime reporter was doing his job with honesty."
