New Delhi, Sep 25: The success of Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and rural road construction schemes in the country impressed Mexico to such an extent that it has announced to soon design its welfare programmes for poor on these initiatives.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is an Indian job guarantee scheme, enacted by legislation on August 25, 2005. The scheme provides a legal guarantee for one hundred days of employment in every financial year to adult members of any rural household willing to do public work-related unskilled manual work

Mariano Ruiz Funes, Mexican Agricultural Vice-President said that they would take positives from these schemes to implement welfare programmes suiting their socio-geographical conditions. "I came to know about the successful run of MGNREGA and rural roads construction programmes in India. Mexico will take help of these schemes to draw its own programme for uplift of our rural population," said Funes.

Funes said he came to know about the schemes during a discussion with Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and his deputy Harish Rawat in New Delhi. "Social welfare programmes like MGNREGA could help us mitigate misery of people there", he said.
