Karuna welcomes withdrawal of fast

Chennai,Sep 21: DMK chief M Karunanidhi today (Sept 21) welcomed the withdrawal of the 11-day-old fast by anti-Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project agitators and said the Centre and state governments should ensure that the assurances given to them were fulfilled.

"This is good news...the Centre and state government should take the responsibility to fulfil the assurances given to the protesters," Karunanidhi said.

He was speaking to reporters here who sought his views on the withdrawal of the fast by the protesters following an assurance from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa that a meeting of the cabinet would be convened tomorrow to request the Centre to halt the project.

Assurances should be kept in order not to "disappoint," the people,he added.
