Prostitution
Lima, Sep 20: A Daily newspaper on Sunday, Sep 18 reported that more than 1,100 teenage girls have been sexually exploited at illegal mining camps of Madre de Dios region in the jungles of southeastern Peru. Media cited this information from Save the Children organization.

Teen girls are generally tempted by outside women, who lure them with false offers of jobs as domestic workers, but finally the ignorant young girls end up working as prostitutes in the Inambari and Huepetuhe districts.

Madre de Dios region is considered as one of the top areas for illegal gold mining in Peru. The mining camps that were set up around Interoceanica Highway have attracted other illegal activities like protitution. The police have raided the so called 'prostibars', where aroung 20 tennage girls were recovered. These underaged girls are brought mostly from Cuzco and Puno regions.

The director of Save the Children in Peru, Teresa Carpio, visited some of these mining camps and was shocked to find that the administrators, some of whom are wanted for kidnapping and human trafficking, consider it totally normal for underage girls to do this kind of work.
