Earthquake: Sikkim CM announces compensation for victims

New Delhi, Sep 20: Pawan Chamling, Chief Minister of Sikkim and President of Sikkim's ruling party Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), announced a compensation Rs 5 lakh to the family of those died in the earthquake and Rs 50, 000 to those injured in the disastrous earthquake that struck the North-East on Sep 18.

He also thanked the central government for their support.

"Nine villages with 10 thousand villagers completely cut off from the mainstream," he said.

Meanwhile, sources reveal that the road from Mangan to district headquarter is now open.

Many roads in the quake struck ares have been blocked completely and it will take atleast 20-30 days to clear the blocks, said the Army.

Two Army jawans during the rescue operations died after being hit by boulders.

The Sep 18, 6.8 magnitude earthquake has left more than 80 people dead and 1 lakh houses have been damaged and and 15,000 houses have collapsed in the earthquake.
