Chennai, Sept 15: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday (Today) made it clear that DMK will not unite with Congress for the upcoming civic election in Tamil Nadu, which is scheduled to be held in October across the state.

DMK chief said that the decision was not taken out of tension with Congress. DMK had partnered with Congress in the recent state election which yielded a disastrous result to the party.

"Local body polls are fought on local issue," Karunanidhi said adding, "That's why the DMK is contesting them alone."

Meanwhile, DMK is an important partner of Congress government in the centre where it has 16 Lok Sabha MPs.

However, there has been a considerable shudder over the arrest of Mr Karunandhi's daughter, M Kanimozhi, over her alleged link in the telecom scam. A Raja, former Telecom Minister from DMK, was earlier arrested for his key role in the scam. Another DMK leader, former union textile minister, Dayanidhi Maran, was also forced to resign as union minister over his alleged involvement in telecom scam.
