Naxalism more arousing challenge than terrorism: PC

New Delhi , Sept 13: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday (Today) termed naxalism as most formidable challenge to the government of India. He also stressed that real barrier was not reestablishing the peace or development in the country but to grab the mind and hearts of the villagers.

The naxalites are operating in different parts of India under different organization. In the eastern states of the mainland India, namely in Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa, they are usually known as Maoists while in southern states like Andhra Pradesh they are known as naxalites.

More people have been killed in maoist attacks this year than in terrorism, said home minister at the inaugural session of the 'national workshop on appropriate development strategies for effective implementation of rural development schemes in IAP (Integrated Action Plan) districts'. National workshop was attended by 60 district collectors from areas suffered from Left-wing extremism.

Later, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said there was unanimous opinion amongst Collectors and state governments that blocks and not districts should be the unit under IAP in the 12th Five Year Plan.
