SC bashes Maya govt; CBI to probe Banda dalit rape case

Mayawati
New Delhi, Sept 12: The Supreme Court order on the Banda rape case might prove as a major setback for Mayawati's government in Uttar Pradesh. The apex court asked the investigating agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to initiate a probe into the rape case in which BSP MLA Purushottam Dwivedi has been accused.

The apex court on Monday, Sept 12 also ordered the CBI to table their preliminary investigating report within six moths. The Mayawati government earlier had ordered CB-CID probe into the rape case.

Dwivedi was arrested over the alleged rape charge. Initially the 17-year-old rape victim was also in jail over some "false" theft charges against her, however, the dalit was released after some days.

Dwivedi was arrested from Banda and is still being kept in prison. Citing the Supreme Court order, it seems that Mayawati's government has been bashed by the apex court.
