Onam 2011 shows flower power in the virtual world

New Delhi, Sept 8: With the most popular festival in Kerala, 'Onam' only a day away, the festivities are on in full swing in the state and others parts of the country. With the traditional occasion evoking a feeling of nostalgia and warmth among Keralities, the event has now made its presence in the virtual world as well.

Taking the most popular symbol of Onam, the 'pookalam" or floral design to the online world, the pookalam has found pride of place in the website of the Kerala Tourism Department. The flower bed in the site is made of 600 video clips about Kerala including the traditional Onam cuisine to the enchanting backwaters to the Ayurveda to the calm beaches of Kerala.

You can view the online pookalam in the Kerala Tourism website. The image is a visual delight that encompasses the true spirit of the traditional harvest festival of Kerala. Kerala Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar commented, "Onam is the most important festival for Keralites and it invokes nostalgia in every Malayalee, especially those staying outside the State."

The Minister stated that the effort is to give not just Onam revelers an insight into the festivities, but was also to give non-resident Keralites and others in the world a unique experience. He added on the virtual pookalam, "It is going to be as tasty as a sumptuous Onam feast."
