Kochi: Gulf Air flight skids off runway, 7 injured

Kerala
Kochi, Aug 29: A Gulf Air flight from Bahrain overshot the runway at the Kochi airport leading to injuries for 7 passengers. The flight was coming from Bahrain to Kochi. There were a total of 137 passengers on board.

Airbus 320 Gulf Air overshot the runway during landing. The flights scheduled arrival time was 3:55 am on Monday. Following the incident, the Kochi airport has been closed for 10 hours.

Slippery ground as a result of the heavy rains is believed to be the reason for the flight slipping off the runway. The injured have been moved to hospital nearby and emergency personnel have been put into action.

Visuals of the damaged plane shown in media channels show that the wings of the plane have been broken off. A special flight from Mumbai is expected to arrive to move the damaged plane from the runway. This exercise will be completed by 3 pm.

Kerala is experiencing heavy showers since the last few days and the plane over ran the runway by close to 700 meters. A major tragedy was averted. The Director General of Civil Aviation has ordered an enquiry into the incident.
