Parl makes history: Calcutta HC judge impeached in RS vote

New Delhi, Aug 18: Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Aug 18 passed the motion to impeach Calcutta High Court justice Soumitra Sen. The Upper House made the history when it initiated the process against the controversial judge who has been held guilty on corruption charges by a specially constituted committee.

The Rajya Sabha, in its first televised impeachment proceedings, voted 189 to 17 in favour of Justice Sen's removal. Now, similar kind of motion will be taken in the Lok Sabha on Aug 26 and Aug 27. If the motion is also adopted in the Lok Sabha, a recommendation will be sent to the President Pratibha Patil that the judge be removed.

53-year old Sen was the second judge against whom impeachment proceedings was initiated when Rajya Sabha took up the motion.

Calling the case a "fit case of misconduct," BJP leader Arun Jaitley had earlier led the BJP charge in the Rajya Sabha against Justice Sen.
