Chennai, Aug 16: A question that often arises is 'Had he been alive today then, what would have Mahatma Gandhi felt about the rampant corruption that is prevalent in India?' The father of the nation is no more, but people in Chennai got a piece of his personal secretary's mind while they were protesting in solidarity with Anna Hazare's movement against corruption.

The incident occurred at a private wedding hall in the capital of Tamil Nadu.

Nonagenarian V Kalyanam, the personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi, during the event walked up to the podium and aired his views on the state of affairs in the country. He was quoted by DNA as saying, “India will get a sure gold medal if corruption is entered as an item in the Olympic Games. We may not be a force in football or athletics or hockey. But India is the undisputed global leader in corruption."

V Kalyanam worked as the Personal Secretary to Mahatma Gandhi from 1943 to 1948.

Ridiculing the contention of several Union ministers like Kapil Sibal and Chidambaram that the Parliament was supreme, Kalyanam said, “These ministers and politicians forget the fact that it is we who elect them and they are our servants."

He was further reported as saying that it was easier to fight against foreign tyranny than take on the same from your own people.

The Delhi Police, on Aug 16 arrested Anna Hazare before he could sit on his proposed fast against corruption and according to the latest they have remanded to seven days of judicial custody at the Tihar jail.

Meanwhile, his arrest seems to have enraged people across the country as reports of strikes and chakka jams continue to come thick and fast.
