Statue of Liberty to be closed for an year for renovations

Visitors can still visit Liberty Island in the New York harbour as it will remain open during upgrades over the next year.
The statue has undergone many physical changes, and has been administered by various departments over its history. It's now managed by the National Park Service.
The statue was closed after the 11 September terror attacks for security precautions, but the base reopened in 2004 after a $20m security upgrade. The observation deck at the top of the crown was reopened on 4 July 2009.
