Tonnes of oil leakage from sunken MV Rak, threat for Mumbai

Ship
Mumbai, Aug 7: The threats of possible oil spill from the sunken carrier MV Rak at Mumbai coast on Thursday, Aug 4 was confirmed following 1.5 to 2 tonnes of oil leaking per hour after the ship sank.

Environmentalists say that of the 340 tons of oil and diesel on the ship, 1/3rd would be evaporated, 1/3rd would be soluble, but 1/3rd would contaminate the sea and the coast. The biggest threat that now looms is the oil spill that could spell an ecological disaster for Mumbai affecting an estimated 100 km of the coastline.

Oil at Juhu will be removed manually. But, the oceanologists and environmentalists fear the negative effects that the marine animals would face that would directly hamper the Mumbai fishermens' business.
