Back to 80s: Candidates with MBA, PhD apply for Peon's post

Udaipur, Jul 27: In a throwback to the 1980s when job was scarce in India, candidates with high profile degrees like the MBA and PhD have applied for a peon's post. Shocking as it may appear, but it has really happened in the Mohan Lal Sukhadia University in Udaipur.

According to a report, candidates with higher educational degrees like PhD, M.Phil and MBA have applied in response to a job advertisement for the vacant post of 15 peons in the MLS University, Udaipur.

NDTV has cited the example of one Manmohan Singh Rathore, who has an MPhil degree in computer science, a journalism degree and is a teacher in a private school but has still applied for the peon's post.

It quoted Rathore as saying, "I have all these big degrees, but there is no assured employment. If I get selected, I'll get to do a government job."

Even the Vice-Chancellor of the University is clueless and surprised over the incident. He was quoted by NDTV as saying, "received applications from candidates who've done PhD, MPhil, MBA and Msc for the post of peon. We are really surprised to get applications from such highly-qualified people."

While one would expect people with such degrees to rake in the moolahs with lucrative careers in the private sector, but there is one aspect to the job which is forcing them to apply for the peon's post - the salary for which is a meagre Rs 4,700 a month. And that is the security of a government job.

While people at places like Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad would be surprised at the news, the reality remains at places like Udaipur that a government job is a better bet than a lucrative career as a professional in the private sector, where despite all the incentives, there somehow seems to be a lack of job security.
