UP farmers go Rahul's way, Mahapanchayat in Greater Noida

Uttar Pradesh
Noida, Jul 24: Farmers from almost 54 villages are all set to gather in a Mahapanchayat in Greater Noida on Sunday, Jul 24. The farmers are expected to take their final decisions on the land acquisition row with the Mayawati government.

The Mahapanchayat is expected to be conducted at Sorkha village whose land also was being grabbed in 2007. The farmers ask developed land equal to five percent of the area of their acquired abadi lands, as per the terms of land acquisition.

The farmers also dared to ransack the ongoing construction works which have been taken place at the original ambit of their villages if they are left unrewarded with their demands.

Earlier, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi also held a Mahapanchayat in the state over the jittery faced by the poor farmers regarding land acquisition.

Though many termed Rahul's padayatra (foot-march) as a "flop shop", The villagers came in huge numbers travelling in trucks, buses and tractor trolleys early morning amid heavy rains on Jul 9.
