Snubbed AI to give Rs 75 lakh to M'lore crash victims' kins

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday, Jul 20 directed the Air India authorities to give Rs 75 lakh as compensation to the families of the victims in Mangalore air crash, 2010.

The court's order has resulted as an another shame for the Air India authorities as they had earlier vowed to give Rs 35 lakh to each families. However, Mangalore Air Crash Victims Families Association moved the high court challenging Air India's offer.

The plea filed by the association had claimed that the international norms mandate a minimum compensation of Rs 72 lakh. The Air India Express from Dubai on May 22, 2010 had crashed outside Mangalore airport in Karnataka, killing 158 people when it burst into flames after running out of runway and plunging into a nearby forest.

The CVR recording of 2.05 minutes indicated that despite being warned by the aircraft computers to "pull up, the captain had not paid any heed. He also ignored the co-pilot telling him to go-around," stated the report.
