Was RIL favoured? Supreme Court's decision for Kapil Sibal

Kapil Sibal
New Delhi, Jul 11: The Supreme Court on Monday, Jul 11 delivered its decision on behalf of the telecom minister Kapil Sibal. The apex court stated that it would not interfere in the investigation which accused Sibal of favouring Reliance.

Earlier, overruling all allegations against him, Sibal stated, ""I am deeply grieved by what is happening by the PIL filed by an NGO in the Supreme Court stating that Telecom Minister has abused his power to reduce penalty on Reliance Telecom to Rs 5 crore."

The apex court also asked not to connect Sibal and others with 2G spectrum scam. Advocate Prashant Bhushan filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) accusing Sibal of downsizing the penalty imposed upon Anil Ambani for violating the terms of a contract.

The controversy lies not just in the allegations against Sibal, but in his decision to use a private lawyer - Rohinton Nariman - to defend himself. That move prompted Solicitor General Gopal Subaramaniam to take the ultimate decision to resign.
