Rahul Gandhi is not Congress' CM candidate for Uttar Pradesh

Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi, Jul 7: With the active interest that Rahul Gandhi is taking in the Congress party's political affairs in Uttar Pradesh, one often wonders if he intends to become the chief minister of the state. It was a question and may be a hope for certain sections in the population of the state, that probably made them sit up and notice the Gandhi scion. However, the Congress party has dismissed all such ideas and clarified that he is not the chief ministerial candidate.

Digvijay Singh, the Congress General Secretary who is also seen by many as the political mentor to Rahul Gandhi, has stated that the Gandhi scion is not his party's chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

He was quoted by the Indian Express as saying, “There is no thinking in the party to project him as chief ministerial candidate." When further asked if his party would at all have a chief ministerial candidate, he said, “No, we will not."

The leading English daily also quoted an answer from Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari to the same question. And he said, “He has a national image."

A senior Congress leader was quoted by the daily as explaining the reason behind not projecting Rahul Gandhi as a chief ministerial candidate. He said, “What if the party does not do well in UP elections? You will then put a question mark on his candidature in 2014 parliamentary elections."
