Senior MDMK functionary arrested for threatening woman SI

Coimbatore, Jun 30: A senior MDMK activist, along with his two friends, was arrested today (Jun 30) for allegedly threatening a woman sub-inspector of police with "dire consequences" during an argument over reported drunken driving, police said.

Sub-inspector Susheela, attached to Thondamuthur police station, had nabbed two persons riding on a two-wheeler last night on charges of drunken driving, police said.

However, the accused contacted MDMK district deputy secretary, Kempanur Kathiravan, who arrived at the spot and asked Susheela to release his friends, police said. In the ensuing argument, Kathiravan threatened Susheela with "dire consequences," if she failed to release the two persons, police said.

The three persons were let off yesterday but were arrested today and cases under four sections, including IPC 506 (Criminal intimidation), have been registered against the trio, who have been remanded to custody, police said.
