New Foreign Secy: Ranjan Mathai named as N Rao's successor

A 1974-batch IFS officer Mathani will officially start work as the new foreign secretary from Aug 1 for the next two years, official spokesperson Vishnu Prakash informed on Monday, Jun 27.
Mathai defeated several heavy weight people as many big names were on the list to grab the powerful eminent position. India's permanent representative to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri and India's high commissioner to Pakistan, Sharat Sabharwal were the two prominent nominees as Nirupama Rao's successor.
As Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi from January 1995 to February 1998, he headed the division dealing with India's relations with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives.
