RK Singh to be the next Union Home Secretary

Singh currently holds the post of Secretary, Defence production, in the Ministry of Defence. S C Aggarwal, the Punjab chief secretary was also in the race for the top job. Singh's interview for the posting was held last week by Home Minister P Chidambaram. Singh had expressed his interest in the job to Defence Minister, AK Antony.
Singh surpassed all the others due to his rich experience in both the defence and home ministries. This very fact led him to bag the prestigious position especially in the aftermath of the 26/11 attacks that saw the two key ministries co-operating in a big way.
Singh has earlier served as the Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry for close to five years. His present term as Home Secretary will be fixed for two years. Singh's predecessor, GK Pillai was largely instrumental in revamping the country's security establishment after the deadly Mumbai Terror attacks.
