Assam clash toll rises to three; inquiry ordered

Guwahati, Jun 23: With one person succumbing to injuries in hospital, the death toll in the clash between farmers and police here rose to three today (Jun 23), officials said.

The person died in the Guwahati Medical College Hospital in the wee hours today, while 59 injured are also being treated in the hospital.

All the injured suffered wounds due to stone pelting, lathicharge and use of tear gas shells, though the actual cause of the death was yet to be ascertained, they said.

Meanwhile Assam Government has ordered an inquiry by Additional Chief Secretary Surajit Mitra into the clash between the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists and the police yesterday.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi condemned the incident and said the rally was held on the issue of eviction of encroachers but the government had already declared that those who had been residing on government land in Guwahati city area for more than 15 years would be given land rights.
