2G : SC verdict on Kanimozhi bail plea on Jun 13

New Delhi, Jun 12: The bail pleas of 2G accused DMK, MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV, MD, Sharad Kumar will be heard by Supreme Court on Monday, Jun 13.

The move to challenge the Supreme Court came after the Delhi High Court earlier dismissed the bail pleas of Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar on Jun 8.

The bail pleas of both accused were rejected on the grounds that they had strong political connections. The CBI strongly opposed to the bail plea of Kanimozhi and the court said that Kanimozhi had the potential to influence witnesses.

The Delhi High Court earlier on May 30, had reserved order on the bail plea of Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar. Her lawyer Ram Jethmalani, portrayed her as a dutiful and responsible mother so her bail plea would be considered.

Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar are currently lodged in Tihar jail along with Ex-Telecom Minister, A Raja and other accused in the 2G scam.

Both their bail pleas were earlier rejected by Justice OP Saini, a special CBI Judge, after they were charged for their involvement in the 2G spectrum scam for accepting a bribe of Rs 200 crore.

Both Kumar and Kanimozhi hold a stake of 20 percent in Kalaignar TV Pvt Ltd and are accused for their alleged role in the hefty money flow amounting more than an estimated Rs 200 crore from Shahid Balwa's DB reality firm (a joint venture with Swan Telecom) to kalaignar TV, a media conglomerate owned by the first family of DMK.

On May 20, 2011, Kanimozhi, along with Kalaignagar TV MD, Sharad Kumar was arrested after the special Central Bureau of Investigation court in New Delhi rejected their bail pleas.
