Move aside Baba Ramdev, Delhi to witness SlutWalk on June 25

SlutWalk Toronto
New Delhi, Jun 8: These surely are the days of revolts and protest and it is now Delhi's turn to see the "sluts" walk in the streets of the Indian capital in broad daylight. If anyone is wondering what have protests, sluts and Delhi to do in one go, then let us clarify that the now famous 'SlutWalk', having made their point in Toronto, Melbourne and Montreal is now set to come to the Indian capital as part of a global campaign against sexual violence.

'Slutwalk' is a campaign that started in response to a Toronto police officer's statement, "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised." It began with an intention to raise voice against the belief that female rape victims are "asking for it".

The movement has become a success in many big cities around the world, especially in Toronto, Melbourne and Montreal. And New Delhi will witness its first ever SlutWalk on June 25.

And Delhi of all cities in India, is a significant choice as the Indian capital has been a witness to some of the most heinous crimes against woman. It is sarcastically referred to as the rape-capital of India.

Social Networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are again to the fore to galvanise the movement and let people know of its purpose. A Facebook description of the event is, "SlutWalk Delhi 2011 is an attempt to reclaim the word Slut, to remove the shame, to replace it with pride! As some definitions go, one suggests that slut is a woman with the morals of a man."

This surely is a brave movement and a need of the hour particularly in India where a female rape victim, more often than not is socially ostracised.
