Amarinder, Badal support clemency for Bhullar

Chandigarh, June 1: The Punjab politics witnesses a fresh turn of clemency issue for condemned former militant Devender Pal Singh Bhullar. As the politicians could sense the possibilities of electoral gains in the upcoming elections, they have started playing an active role in supporting Bhullar.

After the rejection of Bhullar's mercy petition by President Patil, now the question arises whether he should be given life imprisonment instead of gallows. On one side, the Congress chief Amarinder Singh and SAD patron PS Badal supports clemency while BJP claims that terrorism must be penalised.

Apart from party colleagues like Kapil Sibal, Sheila Dixit and Ambica Soni, supporting the demand for clemency, Amarinder got the support from another Congress MLA, Sukhpal Khaira on Tuesday, May 31. But, what makes the entire scenario interesting is that Congress has not yet explained its official position on the subject.

On the other hand, SAD is also yet to explain its official stand on the subject. "With elections barely eight months away, you will probably not get any explanation for the dichotomy," said an insider.
