Bihar: Doctor beaten to death in jail

Gopalganj (Bihar), May 30: A doctor was beaten to death by inmates of a jail after he refused to issue them a fake certificate on Sunday, May 29.

The incident took place when Dr B D Singh went to treat a patient in Gopalganj jail who complained of illness. He was pushed down a stairway after he entered the jail and then beaten up by the prisoners. He lost his life on the way to hospital.

Rajan Yadav, the main accused led the charge. Yadav was given a life time imprisonment in kidnapping case, he along with other inmates of the jail wanted the doctor to issue them a fake certificate, so that they would not be shifted to other jail.

The doctor was killed after he refused to issue fake certificate.

"I saw the doctor bleeding. The doctor went inside the jail as he was told someone was ill. I wasn't on duty," said Kundan Dev, a Police Inspector at Gopalganj.

An FIR into the case has been registered now. Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar has ordered an investigation into the matter but doctors from the Indian Medical Association have threatened to go on a strike.

"FIR has been registered against the prisoners who are involved in the killing of the doctor. We cannot rule out whether there was a personal reason behind the killing of the doctor. They are convicted criminals and we will try to charge sheet them as soon as possible. We will ensure a speedy trail in the case and see to it that the criminals are brought to justices," said K S Anupam, SP, Gopalganj jail.

"The prisoners are already in jail so they don't have to be arrested, but a case will be filed and they will be tried again in this case. A speedy trial will be held," said Amir Subhani, Home Secretary, Bihar.

"The doctor was called inside a room by the prisoners and was thrashed to death," said Dr Baidyanath Singh.
