Get local news on smartphones with 'Google News Near You'

California, May 15: Now, it's very easy to know what's happening in your local area. Android maker Google announced the launch of a new feature called 'News near you' to its Google News service.

The new 'News near you' feature for smartphones brings latest news from users local area. The feature, which is currently available for English US news edition, will be available to provide local news by sharing users location.

Though Google started offering local news in 2008, it is the first time this feature comes to smartphones. Google said that they "do local news a bit differently, analyzing every word in every story to understand what location the news is about and where the source is located."

Users can activate the 'News near you' by activating their location on Google News. Here is the step by step process to activate the new feature. First, go to news.google.com. Then a pop-up will appear asking whether you want to share your location. Simply click 'Yes' and a new section called News near you will appear, showing news from your local area.

'News near you' feature is available on both Android smartphones and Apple iPhones. This new section will be added to the bottom of the homepage and users can organize the sections by going to the personalization page.
