Jaya Ho in Tamil Nadu as Kalaignar's sun sets

It is the Puratchi Thalaivi's rule back in Tamil Nadu once again. Yes, while the Jayalalithaa wave is sweeping across Tamil Nadu catapulting the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) into a force to reckon with in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2011. With the party attaining a clear majority, Jaya appeared elated and appeared confident of her victory while talking to the media after it was indicated that she would win the TN elections.

Amma, as she is fondly called among those in the party cadres, chose to fight against the clanish and alleged corrupt rule of the DMK government and locked horns with a party that was already on life-support system after being embroiled in controversies and scams. The 2G spectrum scam and the DMK entangling in it acted as the biggest blow that spoiled chances for DMK. In spite of the fact that Karunanidhi won in his home constituency of Tiruvarur by close to 50,000 votes, he still faced the biggest set back of his political career.

Never has the DMK have had to face such a humiliating defeat in spite of the goodies promised to voters. Of the present trend (May 13th, 6:43 pm) the AIADMK won 143 and the DMK won 22 of the 234 assembly seats. With the apparent defeat, now the question remains if DMK will be able to don the at least the Opposition hat.

The MDMK headed by Captian Vijayakanth is the most likely candidate who will head the Opposition and with hectic parlance between AIADMK who has the clear upper hand, it will be interesting to know MDMK's role in the government.

With Jayalaithaa coming out with a verbal tirade against the DMK, she had earlier hinted that she does not need the help of alliances to propel her way to people's hearts. Vijayakanth however termed that the AIADMK'S dream run as a “people's victory". He added that he could have contested the polls on his own but partnered with the AIADMK to make sure that the DMK saw defeat. He also added that the DMDK will not seek a role in the government.

AIADMK sources said that amma was going to form a ministry alone without the support of any one. With the figures in the results supporting her in the endeavour, she should find the exercise a cake walk in the present scenario. After she ditched all her allies prior to the elections, she somehow stands vindicated in her judgment.

But will the voters see a repeat of the 2001 public humiliation of Karunanidhi in a pre-dawn swoop on charges of corruption in the construction of fly overs in Chennai that saw him being arrested with Murasoli Maran and TR Baalu. He was also manhandled with the images of them being beamed on television. Will history repeat itself, and will see Jaya hounding the DMK with reserving the same treatment to Kanimozhi and paving her way for a smooth ride to Tihar joining the ranks of A Raja, another DMK patron.

Will she reopen all the pending cases of corruption and open Pandora's box of troubles for Karuna and family remains to be seen.
