Is Raja the scapegoat in the altar of 2G for Kanimozhi?

New Delhi, May 7: Has the proverbial scapegoat been decided in the altar of the 2G spectrum scam that threatens to consume everyone in its way due to its sheer magnitude? With Kanimozhi being the latest victim in the Telecom scam, will the Former Telecom Minister A Raja be the mute victim to bear the brunt of the scandal for the sake of DMKs' dwindling goodwill.

Appearance in the CBI special court over her alleged involvement in the 2G scam on Friday, her earlier bold stance seem to have fizzled out. Her lawyer, Ram Jethmalani seems to use every trick under his sleeve to have her bailed out. The bail plea will be heard in the Patiala House Court on Saturday.

With Jethmalani engaging in a vocal tirade against Raja accusing him of masterminding the controversy, vehemently spoke for his client, “My misfortune is that I am Karunanidhi's daughter and an MP." It has to be remembered that a few months back the DMK Chief had expressed his unbridled support for Raja and claimed a person would be termed guilty only after it was proved. He also strongly reiterated his belief on Raja's innocence, then.

But when the shards of the spectrum bomb struck closer the DMK's first family, the party shifted stands without blinking an eye. Jethmalani further sharpened his rhetoric against Raja and said in court, “Let us also assume that at his (Raja's) instance Rs 200 crore was routed to the TV channel (Kalaignar). What is the offense committed by me? I am only a shareholder in the company."

He powered his argument and added, “I do not suggest that everybody is innocent in this case, but so far as I am concerned I was not handling the day-to-day affairs of the company which had been in the charge-sheet." The DMK now seemingly wants to wash its hand of the controversy completely and present a clean slate in front of investigative agencies.

Kanimozhi's arrival in court on Friday was in itself a sight to behold, flanked by 11 party MPs and DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan. There were earlier reports that Karunanidhi too will be by her side for support, he later decided not to come.

Now the question in everyone's mind is whether Kanimozhi will be arrested or she will manage to get bail. Let us not forget that her arrest will certainly cause friction between DMK and the Congress. After all, Kanimozhi is the precious kani (fruit) in Karunanidhi's political lineage.
