CWG scam kingpin Suresh Kalmadi arrested by CBI

Suresh Kalmadi
New Delhi, Apr 25: The Suresh Kalmadi grin will not flash in front of the media anymore. The ousted Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising committee (OC) chief was arrested by the CBI on Monday. He was summoned by the CBI earlier today (Monday) over irregularities in the time-keeping equipment contract that was awarded to Swiss Timing Co.

Kalmadi was facing the flak for various misappropriations that was done during the number of deals signed as part of the games conducted in Delhi. The CBI has finally nailed Kalmadi after clinching crucial evidence.

According to reports, the CBI was able to attain a video recording of the organizing committee meeting that showed Kalmadi and his associate VK Verma making an announcement awarding the time-keeping contract to Swiss Timing. The evidence was attained when a two-member CBI team travelled to London for investigations.

He will be charged on accounts of criminal conspiracy and cheating under Sections 120 B and 420 under the Indian Penal Code.

There were also allegations regarding the massive irregularities in hiring AM Films, AM Car and Van Hire Limited during the Queen's Baton Relay in 2009. The CBI team also managed to talk to the owner of the companies, Ashish Patel who revealed evidence charging Kalmadi for over-valuing the deal.

The arrest has been one more subject of shame for the UPA government and the Opposition has cried fowl stating that the whole investigations have been delayed to protect those involved. Meanwhile, the Opposition also claims that Kalmadi is only a small part and there are other key personnel involved in the scam.
